Sydney: A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Papua New Guinea’s New Britain island Thursday, the United States Geological Survey said, triggering a tsunami warning.

The major quake’s epicentre was 125 kilometres east of the town of Kimbe, according to USGS, which said it struck at a depth of around 40 km.

Hazardous tsunami waves from the earthquake were possible within 300km of the epicentre along Papua New Guinea coastlines, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.
