We all know Serena Williams is G.O.A.T. (As a matter of fact, she’s also G.M.O.A.T., according to a few billboards spotted along the I-10 in California.) Between giving birth to her first daughter, Alexis Olympia, in September 2017 and her official return to the court with the Fed Cup last month, she’s a woman who balances it all. Nike celebrates her pursuit of excellence in a new commercial that aired during the 2018 Oscars.

In a powerful voiceover, Williams states: “I’ve never been the right kind of woman. Oversized and overconfident. Too mean if I don’t smile. Too black for my tennis whites. Too motivated for motherhood. But I am proving, time and time again, there’s no wrong way to be a woman.”
Produced with International Woman’s Day (March 8) in mind, the commercial focuses on the emotional journey Williams encountered as a black woman in tennis. “I didn’t necessarily begin my career in tennis thinking I was going to be breaking down barriers in the sport,” Williams says in a press release. “But I found myself in this space with this huge platform at my fingers.”
