Ivanka Trump Used Her Personal Email to Conduct Government Business

White House senior advisor Ivanka Trump used her personal email account to discuss White House affairs, according to a new report from The Washington Post.

The Post‘s investigation revealed that throughout 2017 Ivanka sent emails about government business to several White House aides and cabinet members, which violates federal records rules. Sources told Washington Post that Ivanka claimed she was did not fully understand the rules and that none of the emails sent contained any classified information.

“While transitioning into government, after she was given an official account but until the White House provided her the same guidance they had given others who started before she did, Ms. Trump sometimes used her personal account, almost always for logistics and scheduling concerning her family,” said Peter Mirijanian, a spokesperson for Ivanka’s lawyer Abbe Lowell.

Of course, Ivanka’s use of her personal email account will likely draw comparisons to former White House secretary of state Hillary Clinton and her use of a private email server during her tenure in the White House. President Donald Trump criticized Clinton throughout his 2016 presidential campaign, focusing on her emails, and often referring to her as “Crooked Hillary,” which prompted Trump supporters at rallies to repeatedly chant “Lock her up!”

Austin Evers, executive director of watchdog group American Oversight (the group whose FOIA request sparked the investigation) said in a statement: “The president’s family is not above the law, and there are serious questions that Congress should immediately investigate. Did Ivanka Trump turn over all of her emails for preservation as required by law? Was she sending classified information over a private system. For more than two years, President Trump and senior leaders in Congress have made it very clear that they view the use of personal email servers for government business to be a serious offense that demands investigation and even prosecution, and we expect the same standard will be applied in this case.”
