Vanessa Carlton is paying homage to six of her favorite songs with new covers. Chill your Thursday out with what the singer calls “a simple, searing little song”—in this ELLE.com exclusive, she shares her take on folk classic “Little Bit of Rain.”
“The original version of this song was sung by Fred Neil, which is so different from the Karen Dalton version,” Carlton told ELLE.com. “I actually studied Fred’s version for this. Karen’s interpretation makes me cry and I could never mimic her. We ended up doing this song in one take to tape—an ode to another time.”
The video itself has a hauntingly ’70s vibe; its eerie twinning concept was inspired by the video for Barbra Streisand’s dreamy “One Less Bell to Answer.” “We wanted to do something super simple and performance-based,” Carlton says, “but have a moment where I split in two and duet with myself just like Babs did.” And just in case you’re wondering, that’s not a new hair look for Carlton: “This was a great excuse to wear fake bangs.” Watch the nostalgic tribute in full above.
