Man found after 47 days missing on mountain

Rescuers have found a trekker next to the body of his dead girlfriend after he spent 47 days stranded on a Nepal mountain.

Liang Sheng Yueh, 21, was found on Wednesday on a ledge under a waterfall and was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Kathmandu.

Doctors say he had lost around 30kg (4.5 stone) and his foot was covered in maggots – but he is expected to recover.

The body of his girlfriend, Liu Chen Chun, 19 – who had died after 44 days – was also taken to the Nepalese capital.

The couple had been trekking on the Ganesh Himal trail at an altitude of around 2,600m when they were caught in a snowstorm and lost their way in March.

Asian Trekking agency official Madhav Basnet said they appeared to have followed a river in the hope of finding a village, but slipped and fell over a waterfall.

They landed on a ledge but were unable to climb up or down when the weather cleared after a few days.

The pair had their own tent, sleeping bags and enough food to last two weeks – forcing them to consume only salt and water after that.

Rescuers scoured the area for two weeks before suspending the search, which resumed after a two-week break on 20 April.

Mr Basnet said they spotted a red tent and managed to climb down to the pair.

“We found the man alive and able to speak to us, but the woman was already dead. We could not carry them so we called a helicopter,” Mr Basnet said.

Ajay Singh Thapa, a doctor at the Grande Hospital in Kathmandu, said: “He appears exhausted and lost some 30kg of body weight.

“He was suffering from severe malnutrition. His foot was covered with maggots and hair full of lice. Despite having to live like that for 47 days, he appears to be mostly normal.”

He said the man probably survived because he was able to get both salt and water in his body.
